Project: Analogue Tape Delay – Beginnings

The term is nearly over and it’s time to start a new project. I’ve been playing with a few ideas over the last 8 weeks – things to do with IR remote controls mainly – but I’ve also been playing a lot more guitar than I have in a long time, I’ve fallen back in love with it. So the project I’ve chosen to do relates to guitar. It also has a lot of nice analogue electronics and a bit of a retro feel. I will be building a Tape Delay pedal for guitar. For those of you who do not play guitar it will probably be a bit like this, although hopefully more polished and in it’s own box.

It will work on the principle of introducing delay due to the time required for the tape to move between tape heads. At one point in space, the sound will be recorded onto some magnetic tape, at another point the sound will be read from the tape and the time it takes to get from one point to another will be fully adjustable.

For this I will need three tape heads, one to read, one to erase and one to write. As it turns out, tape heads are pretty hard to get hold of now. To ebay…
